The vegetationin Gargano, especially in Bosco Quarto and Foresta Umbra comprises alsovegetation released from long-term anthropopressure, which appears mainly inabandoned, scattered settlements and numerous old fields at the bottom ofcarstic dolines. Forest and grassland vegetation in Bosco Quarto and ForestaUmbra is marked by the effects of long-term anthropopressure variable in form, persistence and intensity.
The geobotanical relations andecological phenomena prevailing here were considered convenient for veryfingour earlier geobotanical-cartographic concepts. This research resulted in twomaps of the vegetation and of the dynamic tendencies in it and two derived mapssupplemented by a common theoretical-methodical text and the necessarydocumentation.
The map of Gargano describes thedynamic state of the vegetation within a given time by notions that determinethe dominance of fundamental ecological processes: fluctuation, primary andsecondary succession, regression, degeneration and regeneration (Falinski,Pedrotti 1990, 1993 and new maps).
